Mitigation Specialists gather information to compile a psycho-social profile of the accused for legal defense teams in capital cases. Psycho-social profiles aid the efforts of the defense team to prevent a sentence of death.

Psycho-social profiles are wide ranging and include, but are not limited to, information about the accused’s adult criminal history, academic records, educational history, employment records, family background, INS records, juvenile criminal records, medical records, military service records, social history and training background.

Profiles require in-depth investigation into alcohol and drug abuse assessments and/or treatment history, as well as, social service and welfare records.

The profile may also introduce additional information pertaining to the accused’s siblings, parents and other family members.
